quiringtemplatesallowcharacterstogainabilitiesthat
cannotnormallybelearned,suchasdarkvisionorspell-
likeabilities,andmajorphysicaltransformationssuch
aswingsorgills.Racialadvancementcanalsoprovide
optionsforincreasingabilityscores,althoughoftenatthe
expenseofhitdice,skills,feats,andotherlearning.
Moregenerally,raciallevelsandtemplatesprovide
waystosetcharactersapart.Adwarfsoinlovewith
theskythatheawakenedthepotentialforwingswithin
himselforanelfdrivenslightlymadbymagicalsurgery
meanttoawakenhisinnerpowersaredistinctive,ste-
reotype-breakingcharacters.Acharactercanbewoven
moretightlyintothestoryofacampaignbymaking
himthescionofanancientrace,whomustunlockhis
innerabilitiestodefeattheenemyofhispeople.
