The director of the camp looked old, too. His appearance attracted Donletti's attention. He had a beard, grey hair, his face seemed a little exotic. Perhaps he was also a foreigner. He approached Donletti slowly and asked him to follow him to his room. There was little furniture in the room, the window was round. The strange appearance of the room caused Donletti to be afraid that the people who lived there were a little strange. The age of the director also told Donletti that it was not an ordinary teacher. But he had certainly come to America a long time ago, because he spoke good English, with only a little of a foreign accent. However, it was not a European accent. When Donletti was listening to him speaking, it began to seem clear to him that this man was from one of the countries in the Far East. He was able to recognise the Orient in this man.
- What can I do for you? - said the old man.
- I am looking for a young girl of French origin.
- Do you think I am likely to be able to help you?
- I have reasons to believe so.
- I see. By the way, my name is Lama Masvadi.
- And I am Inspector Donletti.
Donletti looked in all the possible directions, trying not to attract the old man's attention to this. There were two chairs and a beautiful table in the room. He could see strange pictures on the walls. They seemed to be valuable for the old man. All this looked like the advertisement from the newspaper.
Perhaps the shapes of the things in the room were similar to the shapes of the things in the advertisement's pictures. There were pictures of strange animals on the walls of the room. Donletti was now sure that he could recognise an Oriental person in the old man with grey hair and a beard. But he was not surprised. They continued their conversation.
- So what reasons do you have to believe that I may be able to help you?
-asked the director.
- She was here on a two-week camp.
While they were talking, Donletti was considering the whole situation. He did not like it at all. The man asked politely:
- What is her name?
- Juliet Madmason. Do you know where she is now?
Instead of answering this question, Masvadi began to talk about his philosophy.
- Why do you insist on telling people what they should do? Everybody is free and each of us should decide where to go in his or her life. People should choose it themselves. Why do you disturb their free lives? Everything in the whole world goes its own way. Have you come here to change it?
- I have come here to get information and you teach me your strange philosophy?
- But I hope you have time. Let's talk now.
