If there’s one thing I get a kick out of, it’s being
able to get a bit of free energy. By which, I’m not
referring to the dodgy wiring job running from the
lamppost across the street to my kettle, but making use
of something that would otherwise have been wasted
and lost forever. Maybe it’s the by-product of many
miles of effortless cycling, from being sucked along in
the slipstream of lorries and buses; perhaps it’s just nice
to see the greedy oil companies lose out on a few gallons
in potential sales; or, more likely, it’s just the sheer thrill
of seeing a simple idea implemented that can make a
huge difference to fuel economy and the environment.
We’ve really got the lot in this issue, featuring
currently available solutions such as Parker’s RunWise
system, which has cut some fuel bills by almost half,
Deutz-Fahr’s cab-rooftop solar panels for some light air-
conditioning work, and Cat’s electric regeneration valve
that enables gravity to do most of the work. Then we’ve
got a few futuristic solutions in our Design Challenge,
including the novel one on our cover, which I like to
think of as FOPS (Falling Object Perfection System).
And on the topic of saving energy, I’d also like to
take this opportunity to send out a polite ‘Thanks, but
no thanks’ response to the invitations to 07:00 press
conferences at the imminent ConExpo. Come on,
people – seriously! As if attending trade shows isn’t
tiring enough, you expect us poor journalists to get up
with the lark – usually after having attended a long and,
er, sociable, formal dinner the night before? And then
start the press conference – which on occasion has been
nothing more than the précis of a company report,
rather than anything newsworthy – before I’m barely
halfway through my second slice of melon?
But anyway, in honour of ConExpo – a show I love
in a city I detest – we’ve really got into the spirit of
things, featuring an exclusive interview with CNH
Construction president and new incumbent of the
AEM chair, Jim McCullough, as well as case studies of
construction machinery from two iconic US brands. Oh
yeah… and we’ve devoted approximately one-third of
the magazine to previewing the latest component
highlights that will be on show. We’ll be there with a
booth (S-14209), too – feel free to drop by, although
we’ll be more likely to be found traipsing around the
rest of the exhibits.
Oh, and one inal thing. You might want to pay
more attention than usual to this edition’s Association
View on page 16. I can’t really say too much more at
the moment as this issue will probably be going live on
our website just before the FLTA’s annual bash takes
place, but there’s a real twist in the tale this year…
